Many of us use our cars to travel to various places on a daily basis. Often, we will get in the car without thinking about it and drive to our destination. However, when using your car to take you on a long journey, it is important to do a few checks before you set off. In our latest post, we discuss what checks should be made to your car and why, helping to keep you safe on your travels.
It may sound like an obvious check, but ensuring you have enough fuel to get to your destination will save you a lot of hassle later down the line. Although you may factor in stops to petrol stations along the way, ensure you make these stops before you reach the minimum fuel level for your vehicle.
Your tyres are the only form of contact that you have with the road, so ensuring they are in good condition before you set off is a must. The minimum tread depth for your tyres in 1.6mm.
Before you set off, be sure to check that your tyres have not cuts or bulges and look out for any stones or sharp objects that could be sitting between the tyre tread.
Although not having a sufficient level of screen wash will not affect the drive of your car, marks that cover your windscreen may impede your visibility and worsen the effects of glare.
Top up your windscreen wash before you set off and ensure that all windows and mirrors are clear of marks and smudges.
Even if you don’t believe that you will be driving at a time that will require you to use your headlights, it is still advisable to ensure they are fully working. You never know when you could get stuck in traffic or when the weather will suddenly cause the sky to darken, meaning your lights will be necessary for the safety of you and others on the road. In addition to your headlights, ensure that all indicators are working. When driving, it is important to make sure that all the lights on your vehicle comply with the legal requirements of the location you are driving in.
